Ecoregions shown here are from the World Wildlife Fund Global 200 Ecoregions database The WWF Conservation Science Program has identified 825 terrestrial ecoregions across the globe, and a set of 426 freshwater ecoregions has just been completed. WWF has recently launched an analogous global framework of 229 coast and shelf marine ecoregions in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy..


The TNC basemap is the percent of each global ecoregion that is formally protected, taken from the new Atlas of Global Conservation, published by UC Press and consisting of over 100 maps, charts and essays by leading conservation thinkers. Remote, arid, and cold lands such as the Tibetan Plateau, southwestern U.S. deserts, and Greenland tend to have more habitat protection, while agricultural areas such as the US Great Plains have less.
